African Games: Abeiku Jackson secures bronze in 100m butterfly

Ghana’s swimming captain Abeiku Jackson has secured the nation’s fifth medal at the ongoing 2023 African Games after finishing third in the Men’s 100m butterfly

Jackson, with a time of 53.80 finished behind Egypt’s Abdallah Nasr and South Africa’s Jardon Eaton who recorded times of 53.29 and 53.45 respectively to bag Ghana’s second medal in swimming.

The 23-year-old finished second in the men’s 50m butterfly to win silver – Ghana’s first-ever medal in swimming at the African Games

This feat however follows slight controversy as the initial race (100m Butterfly) was rescheduled after a false start was detected on Monday evening. In that race, Jackson finished second but the results were nullified due to the false start detected prompting another race the following day.

Jackson has massively improved after failing to clinch a medal in the 2019 edition in Morocco.

The medal contributes to Ghana’s growing tally at the 2023 African Games, with Winnifred Ntumi having previously scooped the first three medals in weightlifting.

As the host nation strives to ascend the rankings with victories in various disciplines, there is optimism about surpassing the 2019 performance, where Ghana secured two gold medals, two silver medals, and nine bronze medals, finishing in 15th place.
