Mine Workers Union urges government to help resolve challenges facing revival of Bogoso Prestea Mine

The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) has asked the government to issue fresh warning to managers of Future Global Mine (FGM) to provide a road map on how to revive the Bogoso Prestea Mine.
According to the General Secretary of GMWU, Moomin Gbana, the managers of FGM have failed to pay the salaries of the over 1,500 workers.
He added that the managers have flouted a 120-day directive by government to raise funding to revive the Bogoso Prestea Mine.
“From the foregoing, it is most disappointing and regrettable to state that from 17th April, 2024 when these directives were issued to date, FGR has not only failed to submit evidence to the satisfaction of the Minerals Commission of financial resources available to pay creditors and operate the mine,” Mr Gbana said.
The Union has therefore pleaded with government, through the Local Government Ministry, to revoke the licence of Future Global Mineral Resources.
“Consequently, we call on you to act swiftly and decisively on this matter to give fresh impetus and a new direction to the Bogoso Prestea Mine to protect the incomes and livelihoods of over 1,500 workers and their families, as well as protect and sustain the domestic economy of the Bogoso Prestea community from collapse,” he added.
Mr Gbana emphasised that the GMWU is poised to partner with government to secure another strategic investor to revive the mine.
The Union has proceeded to petition the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Dr Anthony Yaw Baah on the matter.
