I will propose involvement of PTAs in food distribution under Free SHS to cabinet – Bawumia

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to engage cabinet tomorrow to consider deploying the services of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) to supervise the distribution of food under the free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made the pledge when he responded to a comment by a member of the clergy for him to consider feeding under the free SHS programme in case he wins power.

“This is a brilliant suggestion, tomorrow I will be in cabinet with the Education Minister, and this is one of the things I am going to tell him,” Dr Bawumia assured on June 5.

Meanwhile, the NPP flagbearer says he will roll out agriculture as a major policy to address high prices of food on the market.

“That is the reality on the ground, there is hardship. No matter the causes, some people are going through a tough time, I think we should all acknowledge that and see what we can do,” he said.

“For me, what we have tried to do, you can imagine if we didn’t have free SHS, the sort of difficulty that will have been borne by people now if they had to pay the school fees of their children. When we went through COVID, we had free electricity the whole year to try to cushion people in that area,” the NPP flagbearer explained.

“We had to restore teacher trainee allowances, nursing trainee allowances. They would have gone through a lot more hardship without that. Going forward, I will focus on agriculture and food,” he noted.
