Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Roads and Highways, has reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the Bolgantanga-Bawku-Pulmankom road in the Upper East region.

The sector minister gave the assurance when he paid a working visit to the region to inspect the ongoing road project on Wednesday, June 12.

The Bolgatanga-Bawku-PPulmakom road project, which began in 2016, is one of the major road projects being constructed by the government.

The more than 120-kilometer road comes with three major bridges at Bolgatanga, Zebilla, and Binduri.

Although its construction has suffered several delays, the completion of the project is expected to ease movement and open up the eastern corridor to boost economic activities.

During his visit to inspect the progress of work, Mr Asenso-Boakye expressed satisfaction with the first phase of the project. He noted that the project was a top priority for the government.

“I am happy that I’ve had the opportunity to inspect the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmankom road, which is one of the very important [road] projects for this government. The project was in two phases. Phase one has been substantially completed and phase two is ongoing, which involves the construction of three important bridges along the corridor and the dualisation of 1.4-kilometres through the main towns of Bolgatanga,” he told reporters.

The delay in the early completion of the road is taking a toll on road users, who spend more time in transit. The poor nature of the road is also affecting vehicles that suffer constant breakdowns.

However, the sector minister gave the assurance that the contractor who left the site to make some key amendments to the project will return soon to complete it.

“It is so because at the request of the contractor, they needed some amendments to be made and this is one of the first decisions to do as Roads Minister and the issue surrounding the amendment has been resolved… government considers this project as very important one.

“I want to assure the good people of Bolgatanga, Bawku, Pusiga and the entire Upper East region that the contractor will come back to site as soon as possible and complete the rest of the work. This is my firm assurance to the good people of the Upper East,” the minister assured.
