He wanted to make sure we succeed ourselves when we get into office – NAPO recounts ‘profound’ advice from Akufo-Addo in 2011

Running mate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has shared a “profound” advice he received from President Akufo-Addo in 2011.

Speaking during the manifesto launch of the party on Sunday, August 18, Dr. Opoku Prempeh often referred to as NAPO recalled being invited by President Akufo-Addo for a conversation at a famous hotel in Bolgatanga late night around 2 am.

NAPO said the President offered an advice expressing his concern for the party to remain in office in 2016 if they win the 2012 elections.

The party’s running mate recalled President Akufo-Addo telling him “I can only leave the party to one of three people.”

The two of such three persons, NAPO noted includes Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and himself, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Bawumia is not corrupt and has never been investigated for corruption – NAPO

At that period, the party was gearing up for the 2012 elections which they eventually lost to the NDC.

“In 2011, around 2 am I was woken up by the security guards of His Excellency President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo way back in Bolga. When I went to see him, he was alone in the canteen of that famous hotel. We sat down to talk, obviously woken from sleep and he said some profound things to me that evening.

“He said NAPO, Matthew Prempeh, this party, you are the next generation. I am going to give you some advice, pieces of advice this evening and I hope you can stick to it. He said, ‘my whole aim is to make sure that when we get into government, we succeed ourselves and I can only leave the party to one of three people’. He proceeded to mention who he felt comfortable in 2011 to lead the party when he exits office.

“He is our second presidential candidate who is offering 8 years of competent leadership, 8 years of delivery, I can say that two of the three are representing and coming after him. That is, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and my good self, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh,” he narrated.
