Corruption has ‘imprisoned’ Akufo-Addo – Suhuyini

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has performed poorly in the fight against corruption, Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has said.

In his view, this explains the president’s silence on corruption in the 2024 State of the Nation address that he delivered on Tuesday, February 27.

Asked whether he was surprised that Mr Akufo-Addo did not mention anything on corruption, Suhuyini told Johnnie Hughes on the Sunrise show on 3FM on Wednesday, February 28 that “No, because corruption has imprisoned him.”

He added “In his 2017 State of the Nation address, he made a pledge that ‘my government will enforce the procurement law’.  Before that, he also made the pledge to the people of Ghana that sole sourcing would become a thing of the past and that he would use the Anas principle.

“Today, Anas is fighting for his survival under his watch and the Anas principle is not to be heard within government circles. Today, the level of corruption in his government, I believe the level of corruption is even more than the perception that is measured by Transparency International. The transparency international puts his government as the worst ever in the fourth republic.”

Suhuyini further said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had destroyed the confidence that people had in him prior to becoming president.

In his view, it would have served Mr Akufo-Addo better if he had remained an opposition leader rather than becoming the head of state.

“It is such a tragedy that his excellency Nana Akufo Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia became leaders in this country, the former broadcaster said.

Asked what advice he would give to the president if he met him, Suhuyinianserede “It is too late for him to take any advice, I think it would have been better if he had stayed the opposition leader, his story in history, I am sure would have been kind and fair but as president he has destroyed every iota of confidence that people had in him.

“You can speak to Dr Nyaho Tamakloe about it and he will tell you that Nana Akufo-Addo has made him a prophet.”

The Minority in Parliament expressed disappointment in President Akufo-Addo for not touching on the unemployment situation in the country in his address.

The Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said after the president’s address in Parliament that the unemployment situation is currently at a critical level therefore it was surprising that Mr Akufo-Addo was silent on it.
