Election 2024: 50% of voters say Akufo-Addo’s ‘refusal’ to sign anti-LGBTQ bill won’t affect their voting decision

Majority of Ghanaian voters (50 percent) have indicated that President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to assent to the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024, will not change their voting decision in the December 7 polls.

According to data from Global Info Analytics’ recent National Opinion Poll for the 2024 General Elections, 37 percent, however, said the president’s failure to sign the bill will influence their voting decision ahead of December 7, 2024.

“On whether the refusal of the President to assent the [anti-LGBTQ] bill will have electoral consequences, majority of voters, 50%, said his refusal to sign the bill will not influence their vote in the December elections, while 37% said it will and 13% did not have an opinion,” the data revealed.

Meanwhile, on the regional scale, 72 percent of the residents in the Upper West region did not support the decision by Parliament to approve the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. And 48 percent of residents of the Ashanti region also did not support Parliament’s decision.

The Bono and Western regions came in with the highest support of 84 percent apiece for Parliament’s move to approve the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. Only 12 and 14 percent of the residents, respectively, said they do not support the House’s decision to pass the bill.
