Ghana owes half of African Games hotel bills

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has confirmed that half of the hotel bills from Ghana’s hosting of the African Games remain unsettled.
Addressing the media at a press conference in Accra, Ussif responded to reports that claimed the ministry owed more than 48 hotels for their services during the event.
Ussif clarified the situation, stating that 44 hotels were contracted to provide hospitality services for the African Games. Of these, 16 have been fully paid, while the remaining 28 are still owed money. Despite this, all 28 hotels have received over 40% of their due payments.
“For your information, we engaged 44 hotels during the African Games and as we speak, it is only 28 that the ministry owes. The rest have all been paid in full and the 28 have all received more than 40% of payment and as and when we receive funds, the rest will be settled,” the minister explained.
The Ministry remains in regular communication with the hotels regarding the outstanding payments, and some have already collected cheques from the Ministry last week.
The African Games, originally scheduled for 2023, were postponed to 2024 due to delays in completing key facilities, including the Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium.
Despite the challenges, host nation Ghana achieved a commendable tally of 69 medals, while Egypt topped the medal table with 193 medals.
