He was a hero of our time – Mahama’s tribute to E.T. Mensah

Former President Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Enoch Teye Mensah.

According to him, the late member of the Council of State was really committed to the development of Ghana.

“Today, we gather to pay homage to a hero of our time — a comrade and a statesman, whose life’s journey has been an embodiment of leadership and commitment to national service: the late Hon E. T. Mensah,” he wrote in a tribute read at the final funeral rites of E.T. Mensah held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on January 4.

Mr. Mahama said “E.T. and I both joined Parliament in 1997. Before joining Parliament, I recall that he served as an Accountant at the University of Ghana. Even while at Legon, E. T. Mensah was a key, committed member of the PNDC/NDC and served the party and nation under President Rawlings with diligence. In Parliament, E.T. was an effective, boisterous and passionate lawmaker. He was someone you could trust to get the job done. Indeed, we enjoyed our time in Parliament together. It was no surprise, therefore, that he later became our Minority Chief Whip, and subsequently Majority Chief Whip when we came into office in 2009.”

He continued that, “Because of his efficiency and remarkable leadership, he was maintained as a Member of Parliament on five successive occasions — one of the longest periods of service in the history of our Legislature. He was a man who took his duties seriously. Whether as a Minister of State, an MP, or a Council of State member, he demonstrated remarkable commitment to duty and excellence in all his endeavours. He was a man of deep foresight as far as the party was concerned.”

The NDC flagbearer for the 2024 presidential election and a student of history described the late former Mayor of Accra as one of the nation’s illustrious sons.

“When you flip through the pages of our nation Ghana’s history, you will find illustrious figures who stand tall as pillars of unwavering dedication and service. While some lived in ages past, for which reason we did not encounter them physically, there are, still, others that we have been blessed to have known and engaged,“ Mahama wrote about E.T. Mensah.
