Manchester City cruise to victory over Sheffield United

Rodri scored City’s late winner when they beat Sheffield United in August, and opened the scoring early on this time, with his fifth goal of the season

Manchester City closed out 2023 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Sheffield United, moving them within striking distance of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Rodri opened the scoring for City in the first half, capitalising on a clever pass from Phil Foden to fire home from the edge of the box. Foden turned provider once again in the second half, crossing for Julian Alvarez to tap in City’s second goal.

The win capped off a remarkable year for City, who celebrated their fifth major trophy of 2023 before kick-off by displaying all five titles on the pitch. The reigning Fifa Club World Cup champions showed no signs of slowing down, dominating possession and creating plenty of chances against a stubborn Sheffield United side.

Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne made his return to the squad after a lengthy absence due to injury, although he did not feature in the match. However, his presence on the bench was enough to generate excitement among the home crowd, who are eager to see him back in action.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, struggled to pose any real threat to City’s goal, mustering only a few half-chances in the first half. Their lacklustre performance left them rooted to the bottom of the table, still searching for their first away win of the season.
