Oppong Nkrumah calls for paradigm shift in the housing sector to achieve significant gains in the next 15yrs

Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in Ghana’s housing sector to achieve significant gains in the next 15 years.
To that end, he has a five-part solution to address the housing challenges in Ghana.
He said this on his X page after delivering the keynote address at the 2024 BUSIA Institute Lecture in Accra on 31st July 2024, on the theme “Housing the Future: Innovative Approaches to Rural Development in Ghana.”
His five-part solution includes “Getting the Data Right”
“We need disaggregated and dynamic data, hence the reform of the Research, Statistics, and Information Management Directorate at the Ministry of Works and Housing,” he said.
The second is ‘Developing the Right Institutional Framework’
The Ofaosei Ayiebi lawmaker explained that “the District Housing Unit is established to focus on developing and implementing housing programs for rural districts.”
The third is “Deploying the Right Interventions through Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs)”:
Enhancing public-private partnerships to reduce the risk of future stalled projects is key, he said.
The fourth point is improving Financing:
He explained “leveraging the National Homeownership Fund to provide affordable financing for district housing projects and mortgages.”
“Efficient Execution: Establishing a Housing Authority to shift project execution from political to technical actors, mitigating the incidence of stalled projects.”
The Ministry of Works and Housing, he said, is committed to ensuring the success of the district housing programme, with a strong emphasis on rural housing, inspired by Professor Busia’s vision.
