PNC raises concerns about ‘hasty’ SHS placements; urges GES to reopen Jan 3

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has expressed deep concerns over what it calls the “rushed” and “untimely” approach used by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in this year’s computerized school selection and placement system (CSSPS).
The opposition party says this has put students and parents under enormous pressure to report to schools merely three days after releasing the placements.
“This sense of urgency is concerning, considering that a vast majority, approximately 70% of students, have been placed in schools they did not choose,” the party said in a statement issued by General Secretary Janet Asana Nabla on Monday, December 4, 2023.
“Moreover, it is unfortunate that certain students have found themselves placed outside their regions or vicinities with no prior consultation or input from them.”
The statement acknowledged how parents are grappling with getting financial resources to cater for the associated responsibilities.
“It is undeniable that such an abrupt and unreasonable expectation puts undue strain on families.”
The PNC’s statement urged the Service to consider giving heed to the calls by the Speaker of Parliament to postpone the reopening for the Form 1 students.
It also suggests that the reopening should be Wednesday, January 3, 2024.
“This extension would offer both parents and students sufficient time to adequately prepare for the upcoming academic year, thereby alleviating the stress and anxiety caused by the current situation.
“The PNC urges the Ghana Education Service to prioritize the well-being and academic success of students and make a concerted effort to address the concerns raised.
“This will ensure that the education system remains inclusive, fair, and accessible to all Ghanaian children, without leaving others behind.”
